It’s the season to start digging into your storage cupboard and freezer for some of the summer vegetables and fruit you’re bound to be missing right about now.

Frozen berries, canned peaches, salsa and pickles can add a little lift to February’s fare.

At winter farmer’s markets, you may find storage fruits and veggies, such as apples, pears, cabbages and turnips. You may also find some fresh greens, like kale and leeks, as well as herbs like rosemary and sage.

Don’t forget local meat and dairy, which are particularly good choices when gardens aren’t growing.

This seasonal chart by Get Local provides a good break down of what’s available each month, indicating what’s stored, fresh and greenhouse-grown.

Watch Farmgate for an upcoming story on a unique B.C. vegetable that’s greenhouse-grown and available in many local grocery stores right now.

(Here’s an INDEX of Farmgate’s monthly What’s in season now posts.)
